Dr. Daniel S. Turner, professor of civil and environmental engineering at The University of Alabama and director of the University Transportation Center for Alabama, has been elected president of the Council of University Transportation Centers.

UA Engineering Offers Summer Programs for High School Students

The University of Alabama College of Engineering will host two programs this summer for students who have an interest in science, mathematics and engineering. The SITE program is designed specifically for rising juniors and seniors in high school, and the E-MAP program targets recent high school graduates that have been admitted to engineering for the fall semester.

Aaron Quick, a University of Alabama senior majoring in civil and environmental engineering, recently placed fourth in the Daniel W. Mead contest for students sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Quick was one of five national winners for papers featuring risk management and engineering.

UA Engineering Students Design Shingle Lifting Devices

University of Alabama senior mechanical engineering students have designed and created shingle lifting devices for Habitat for Humanity. The lifts are used to save labor by lifting shingle bundles and other materials to the roof of houses in the process of being built.

UA Hosts Engineering Automotive Workshop

The University of Alabama will host a regional workshop titled, "Engineering the Automotive Future," on Jan. 24-25 at the Bryant Conference Center. Topics include fuel cells, the hydrogen economy, hybrid electric vehicles and advanced internal combustion engines. The event is co-sponsored by UA's Center for Advanced Vehicle Technologies.

UA Mechanical Engineering Students Design Fishing Rods for Quadriplegics

University of Alabama senior mechanical engineering students have designed and created fishing rods for quadriplegics, which can be operated orally with a "sip and puff" set of switches. The "Sip and Puff" method allows handicapped fishermen to cast and reel in a lure using breath control by changing the air pressure within a straw. The competition is designed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

UA Engineering Students Develop Toys for RISE Center

University of Alabama senior mechanical engineering students have designed and built ride-on toys for children who have motor skill limitations and attend the RISE Program at the Stallings Center. Besides giving the children toys to ride, the toys will provide these children with experience in driving electronic devices and help prepare them for electric wheelchairs sooner.
