TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Dr. Charles Haynes, professor of civil and
environmental engineering at The University of Alabama, was recently
appointed by Alabama Governor Don Siegelman to the Alabama
State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
Nominated by the Society of Mining, Metallurgical and Exploration
Engineers for the appointment, Haynes will serve on the five-person
board for a five-year term. His duties will include overseeing the
practice of engineering and land surveying in the state and reviewing
candidates seeking Professional Engineer and Land Surveyor registration
in Alabama.
Im honored to have been chosen for this position,
Haynes said, and Im looking forward to helping to keep
the practice of engineering and land surveying in Alabama at its
high level of quality.
Haynes is originally from Hueytown. He received his bachelors
degree in mining engineering from UA in 1962, his masters
in mining engineering from the Pennsylvania State University in
1964, and his doctorate in petroleum engineering from the University
of Texas in 1971.
From 1967 to 1976, Haynes served as assistant professor of mining
engineering at UA. He then became executive vice president and later
president of Belden & Blake Corp., an energy company headquartered
in North Canton, Ohio. He returned to UA as a professor of mineral
engineering in 1991 and served as head of the mineral engineering
department and as associate dean for academic programs for the
College of Engineering. In 1996, he became a professor in UAs
civil and environmental engineering department.
Haynes is a registered Professional Engineer in Alabama, and has
been inducted as a Distinguished Engineering Fellow of the UA College
of Engineering.
