TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Former University of Alabama All-American and
Cleveland Brown NFL Hall of Famer Ozzie Newsome returns to Tuscaloosa
as the honorary chair for the second annual Bridge Builder Celebrity
Golf Classic to be held June 21-22 at the Ol Colony Golf Course
in Tuscaloosa.
Proceeds from the tournament, sponsored by the Alpha Tau alumni
chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity, will benefit The First Tee
of Tuscaloosa, a program designed to introduce disadvantaged youth
to golf, the Benjamin Barnes YMCA of Tuscaloosa; and local scholarships.
The tournaments name reflects the hard work and lifelong
commitment to building bridges of opportunity shared by Newsome
and members of Omega Psi Phi fraternity, said Samory Pruitt,
event chair. Mr. Newsomes civic activities are as impressive
as his athletic career.
Pre-tournament events are Friday, June 21, with the tournament
scheduled for Saturday, June 22. Tournament registration is $85
and includes green fees, and a barbecue with Newsome and friends.
A semi-formal victory dance will be held Saturday, June 22 at 9
p.m. at JADE in the Ramada Inn in Tuscaloosa. Individual
dance tickets are $10 and include hors doeuvres.
The University of Alabama is proud of the accomplishments
of Ozzie Newsome and will always consider him a favorite son,
said UA President Andrew Sorensen, a tournament sponsor.
Newsome, who received the Paul Bryant Award in 1996, is currently
the vice president for player personnel with the Baltimore Ravens.
He is credited with putting together the Baltimore Ravens team that
dominated Super Bowl XXXV.
The University of Alabama, the Tuscaloosa community, and
the fraternity have played a major role in my success, Newsome
said.
I am very fortunate that God keeps providing me with opportunities
to help others, Newsome said.
