Higher Education deserves legislative support – UA students awarded Goldwater scholarships – Former congressmen give UA students a behind-the-scenes look at U.S. government

Editorial: Higher education deserves support
Tuscaloosa News – April 1
…U.S. News and World Report named the UA school No. 32 among all law schools nationwide. It rated No. 11 among the public law schools…Also rated highly was the University of Alabama's School of Social Work, which was named 42nd nationwide and 28th among public schools. The magazine rated the UA College of Arts and Sciences' graduate program in clinical psychology 62nd and the College of Education 87th. UA's School of Library and Information Studies, part of the College of Communication and Information Services, ranked 30th; while it was included in this year's ratings, the library school was evaluated in 2006…These are impressive achievements - even more so for the fact that they were made at Alabama colleges and universities. They should not be jeopardized by the Legislature, which is considering Gov. Bob Riley's plan to cut funding for higher education by 13 percent.
