CAPS is committed to using state of the art technologies for research, software development and outreach to improve public safety with special emphasis on three major focus areas of law enforcement, homeland security and transportation safety. CAPS was formerly known as CARE Research and Development Laboratory (CRDL). In 2009, The University of Alabama Board of Trustees unanimously voted to establish the Center for Advanced Public Safety. Housed in Shelby Hall on The University of Alabama campus, CAPS is affiliated with the department of computer science in UA’s College of Engineering.
