University promotes service learning
Tuscaloosa News – Sept. 28

Hoping to spur more service learning in the state, the University of Alabama invited representatives from 22 campuses to share and learn about the topic. “We hope this can inspire commitment from colleges around the state in addressing poverty as a moral obligation," said Stephen Foster Black, conference organizer and director of UA’s Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility. Titled “To Whom Much is Given," the two-day conference kicked off Thursday and concludes today.

125-year-old bridge may return home

…Willis and the Friends of Historic Northport, a nonprofit group that promotes city history, have been working for three years to return the bridge, once the only iron span between Northport and Tuscaloosa, to the banks of the river…The bridge project will serve as a hands-on classroom for University of Alabama engineering students, who have been working with the Friends of Historic Northport on the details of relocating the bridge. Jim Richardson, an associate professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering at UA, has been analyzing methods of lifting the bridge and determining the strength of the wrought iron.

Filmmakers and film lovers will travel to downtown Birmingham this weekend, in and around the historic Alabama Theatre, for the ninth annual Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival…University of Alabama instructor and filmmaker Aaron Greer’s documentary “Flying Away: Profile of an Artist” follows renowned dance instructor Cornelius Carter and his approach to art and choreography in the South…This marks Greer’s fourth year with Sidewalk. Some of his past work includes the experimental film “Not Colorblind Just Nearsighted” about racial categories in the South, an adolescent coming-of-age film “Getting Grown” and the 15-minute dance short “Ballet Noir.”

University, Hillel negotiate building purchase
New parking deck could take place of Hillel House

The Hillel House, home to the University's Jewish student organization, may soon be moved from its location between Bryant-Denny Stadium and the Strip, to a new location across campus. Stan Bloom, co-chairman of the Hillel board, said the University and the organization have almost finalized a deal to sell the current property and purchase the property next to the Hotel Capstone, where the Stoneleigh Apartment buildings are located.

UA starts new peer advising program

The Career Center has started a new peer adviser program designed to help students looking for answers about their majors and career options, said Tiffany Goodin, a career consultant at the center.

Sabanation T-shirts blanket the state, as well as pockets of Florida, the state with the second-largest number of UA alumni after Alabama. An estimated 125,000 people, far more than the stadium holds at the University of Alabama's campus, showed up for last weekend's game against Georgia. An unprecedented 970 tents sprouted on the quad. "We actually photographed and counted the tents," said Pat Whetstone, director of alumni affairs for the National Alumni Association of the University of Alabama. "It beat the previous record of 720, set the prior week against Arkansas. The feeling is the table is set and we've got a great coach and we're not there yet, but we're coming back."
