UA system seeks boost in funds

The Univer¬sity of Alabama System board of trustees has approved seeking a slightly more than 15 percent in¬crease in state funding for its three campuses. State funding for the UA Sys¬tem currently is $611 million. If ap¬proved by the Legislature, the pro¬posed increase for the 2008-09 budget, which begins Oct. 1, would give the system about $703 million. System Chancellor Malcolm Portera said Friday the system's requested increase is based on its needs, but he said the years of such hefty increases may be numbered because of economic conditions. "I think the future is going to be a challenge for us financially," Portera said. "Much will depend on how the economy goes national¬ly, but we are seeing evidence that the good years we've seen recently may be ending."…

Witt updates Board about UA's growth

At the UA System Board of Trustees meeting, UA President Robert Witt updated the trustees on the status of his seven-year plan for the University. After the first four years, the future of the plan - shared by faculty, administrators and students - looks strong, he said. "When we laid out that vision and plan four years ago, it was a shared plan," Witt said. "I can tell you that it is an even more strongly shared plan." …

Opinion: Universities need stable funding

Malcolm Portera, chancellor of the University of Alabama System, is asking the Legislature for a 15 percent increase in funding…Although the $703 million budget request is based on genuine need - if called to do so, Portera can justify every penny in the increase, and more - he already seems to be preparing leaders of the three schools in the system to be prepared to accept less…

ESPN to carry Iron Bowl

The University of Alabama’s game at Auburn has been set for a 7 p.m. kickoff on ESPN. The Nov. 24 game was bypassed by CBS, with the network electing to broadcast Tennessee at Kentucky at 12:30 p.m., followed by Florida State at Florida at 4 p.m. Clemson at South Carolina will be televised by ESPN2 at 6 p.m.

Program gives book to first lady

Members of the University's master of fine arts in book arts designed and built a book that Linda Bachus, wife of Alabama Congressman Spencer Bachus, gave to first lady Laura Bush. The gift included a book detailing Bush's family history, a scroll form of the book and a presentation box. Bachus presented it to her at Southern culture-themed luncheon in Washington, D.C., according to a University press release…

UA Students Sign Cards for Veterans

Davis mulling politics beyond next election

Certificates laud him as a UA National Alumni Association Outstanding Commitment to Teaching award winner, while others name him as a distinguished alumnus.
