Car nets more than $1 million for UA scholarships

Thanks to a unique gift to the University of Alabama, a sportscar that once raced in Europe and Africa will eventually send students to college. Sports car enthusiast Darrell Westfaul bought a Ferrari in 1966 while he was a student at UA for $1,500, the equivalent of about $9,300 today. Forty years later, he sold the car for more than $1 million..The money from the sale is managed by the university and invested..When set up, the fund could pay out $60,000 a year for scholarships.
Rain fails to dampen drought

Mary Jo Modica, horticulturist at the University of Alabama Arboretum, said that the shade provided by the clouds is almost as important to the plants as the rain. "It's the combination of the rain and the cloud cover because it allows the plants to rest a little bit and not lose a tremendous amount of water from the blazing sun and heat," Modica said.
Conference for accounting set

Registration will end Friday for the Lean Accounting Conference, hosted by the Alabama Productivity Center/Alabama Technology Network at the University of Alabama. The conference will be July 17-19 in the Alabama Institute for Manufacturing Excellence building at UA.

Dr. Robert J. Teare, 74, of Tuscaloosa, died peacefully the morning of June 13, 2007.A much-esteemed Professor of Social Work at the University of Alabama from 1976 to 1998, he continued to teach part-time for the nine years after his retirement.
