Students gain legal access to download free tunes with Ruckus

A new way to avoid music piracy is available at the Capstone. Ruckus, an online music service, has partnered with the University to enable students, faculty members, staff and alumni unlimited access to download music legally from a library of nearly 3 million songs. Alicia Browne, associate director for information and communication of the Office of Housing and Residential Communities, said it is free for all students with a bama.ua.edu e-mail address, and it requires faculty members, staff and alumni to pay a small monthly fee…

UAPD, SGA creating student neighborhood watch

In an effort to keep the outskirts of campus protected, the University of Alabama Police Department has created the Fringe Patrol Division and is in the process of creating the Crimson Watch program. The Crimson Watch program will be a unified effort between the SGA, UAPD and students to help protect the surrounding neighborhoods that are designated as off-campus housing…

Revamped Get on Board Day starts today

…Josh Edrington, vice president of CCSO and a junior majoring in advertising and psychology, said students should notice some differences between this year's Get on Board Day and last year’s. “We had some complaints about navigation and how to find your way around last year so we're going to color code and have categories and balloons around so it will be easier," he said..

Dean of students position reinstated

…In July, Nelson reinstated the position of dean of students one year after then-Vice President of Student Affairs Margaret King closed the office. Nelson appointed Tim Hebson to the position, who was previously the director of Student Judicial Affairs…keeping the dean of students office open until 8 p.m. is one change for the office Hebson said he would like to see.

UA sorority recruitment continues to grow

…UA Panhellenic President Julia James said she also thought the week went well. "I'm really pleased that 87 percent of girls that signed their bid cards got their first choice," James said. "I think overall all the chapters have been really pleased with their recruitment classes."…With the increase of women participating in recruitment each year, the Alabama Panhellenic Association is considering adding two more National Panhellenic Conference sororities to campus…

Alabama poverty at 16 percent
