The University of Alabama’s vision of recruiting the “best and brightest” students is clearly becoming a reality as UA ranks 11th in the nation among public universities in the enrollment of National Merit Scholars for 2006-2007, and 29th among all universities. The rankings, based on the National Merit Scholarship Corp.’s newly-released 2005-2006 annual report, place UA among the top 8 percent nationally among colleges and universities that enrolled National Merit Scholars.

Nick Saban Named Head Football Coach at The University of Alabama
Nick Saban, head coach of the National Football League’s Miami Dolphins for the past two seasons, has been named the 27th head football coach of The University of Alabama Crimson Tide. Saban has compiled a record of 106-59-1 (.642) in 13 seasons as a head coach, having also led programs at Louisiana State (LSU), Michigan State and Toledo.

UA’s Alabama Insurance Society Back in Business
If the recent inaugural meeting and banquet of the reconstituted Alabama Insurance Society is any indication, the organization is back and healthy after an extended period of dormancy. In its heyday during the 1970s, the Alabama Insurance Society, known as AIS, was one of the most active student organizations on The University of Alabama campus. But with the retirement in 1988 of the legendary Dr. John Bickley, professor of finance and insurance, the emphasis of the academic program in insurance changed, and, over time, the AIS became inactive.
