TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - David G. Courington of Decatur was named a Chemical
Engineering Fellow of The University of Alabama College
of Engineering during a recent meeting of the Capstone Engineering
Societys Board of Directors.
Courington is a 1974 graduate of UA with a bachelors degree
in chemical engineering. He has worked with the 3M Company in Decatur
since 1972, starting there in a cooperative education position.
He is now product manager at 3M.
In presenting the award to Courington, Dr. Gary C. April, head
of the chemical engineering department, said, This award is
given to only a select few alumni who have distinguished themselves
by contributing to the profession through a commitment and dedication
to high ideals. Only one in 10 graduates is recognized as a departmental
Fellow, and we are extremely proud of those who have gone on to
successful careers that mean so much to the quality of life of their
families and those who live in their communities.
Mr. Couringtons untiring efforts to encourage others
to pursue a career in chemical engineering, to introduce the challenges
of the profession through personal contact, scholarships, plant
tours and seminars, and to give unselfishly of his time and energy
on behalf of the College are deserving of this special recognition,
April said.
A plaque commemorating the honor was presented to Courington. He
is one of five Chemical Engineering Fellows currently serving on
the board of the Capstone Engineering Society, which is the alumni
association for the College. The others are Edward Englebert, Harry
Holliman, Lamar Faulkner and John Covington.
Courington is the son of William Courington, now deceased, and
Jean (Courington) Olmsted of Decatur. He is married to Jackie Gooch
Courington, originally from Florence, and they have one daughter,
Megan.
