Hoole Library Event Recognizes GLBT Student Groups at UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – An awards ceremony and reception will be held in the lobby of the W.S. Hoole Special Collections Library on Monday, Feb.11 from 4-5 p.m. to recognize the 25th anniversary of the establishment of a Gay and Lesbian student group on The University of Alabama campus.

A collection of materials documenting the history of the student group has been contributed to the University, and a small exhibit of materials from this new collection will be on display for the event.

The oldest materials came from Dr. David Lee Miller, the first faculty adviser of the first GLBT student group, called the Gay Student Union, which was established in 1983. Another major contributor to the collection has been Dr. Annabel Stephens, retired UA professor, who served as the faculty adviser to the student group for most of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Joshua Burford, coordinator of Freshman Community Outreach at UA, assisted in gathering the collection.

Speakers at the event will include Miller and the current president of the undergraduate GLBTQ group on campus, Spectrum. A reception sponsored by Capstone Alliance, an organization on campus which supports GLBTQ faculty and staff, will follow.

The Hoole Library is located on the second floor of Mary Harmon Bryant Hall.

For more information, contact Jessica Lacher-Feldman, public & outreach services coordinator for the Hoole Library, jlfeldma@ua.edu or 205/348-0506, or Joshua Burford, coordinator of Freshman Community Outreach at UA, burfo003@sa.ua.edu or 205/348-5586.
