TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – LaTonya Washington of Moundville, a junior majoring in social work at The University of Alabama, was recently awarded the 2006 Student Recognition Award by the Association for Community Organization and Social Administration for her outstanding service to social work practice.

Only two students nationally, one undergraduate and one graduate, are awarded this honor.

“Unlike some students who say, ‘Why don’t we do that?’ LaTonya just pitches right in and does it,” commented Dr. Kathleen Bolland, undergraduate chair, in support of Washington’s nomination.

Washington participated in a trip to Bayou La Batre on the Alabama Gulf Coast to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina. Together with other students from the UA School of Social Work, she participated in efforts to provide ongoing material relief for families affected by the hurricane.

In addition, Washington serves as president of the Undergraduate Social Work Organization, the major student organization for undergraduate social work majors at UA.
