September 2, 2005 Update UA College of Education Participates in Relief Efforts The College of Education at The University of Alabama held a book drive and delivered over 200 books and games to evacuees at the UA Rec Center on Friday. Boxes of supplies and household items were also delivered to a local relief agency. Golden Key To Host Pizza Party Golden Key International Honor Society will host a pizza party for children at the Student Recreation Center shelter on Monday, Sept. 5 from 1-4 p.m. Law School Provides Special Admissions to Visiting Students The University of Alabama School of Law has offered special admission for the fall semester to visiting students who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina. The Law School is making available 25 total visiting openings to second-year and third-year law students from Tulane and Loyola-New Orleans. The School of Law is working to facilitate requests for enrollment, assist with housing, books, and supplies for these students. At this time, 20 students have been accepted to enroll for the fall semester, the majority of which are Alabama residents. Members of the faculty and staff of the School of Law are working together to make sure visiting students are welcomed and provided everything they need to continue their education. Lunch Provided at Student Recreation Center The UA facilities division, construction administration, Bama Dining, Ferguson Center and auxiliary services teamed with McAbee Construction and Hoar Construction to provide a lunchtime cookout for evacuees staying at the Red Cross shelter at the Student Recreation Center today. Employees from the various organizations set up grills and served hamburgers and hot dogs outside the Rec Center. Other contributors included Zeigler, Golden Flake, Western Supermarkets of Birmingham and Piggly Wiggly. UA Employees, Vendors Collect Funds and Deliver Supplies to Hattiesburg A fund drive started by the UA facilities division raised some $5,500 to provide much-needed food and fuel to a community in Hattiesburg, Miss. In addition to facilities employees, contributions came from the UA division of financial affairs, the office of counsel, Harrison Construction, Hoar Construction, Turner Construction and Premier Electric. Volunteers purchased supplies and drove them to Hattiesburg last night. Hurricane Relief Fund Established by WVUA WVUA Television has set up a Hurricane Relief Fund at The Bank of Tuscaloosa to benefit Evacuees housed at the University of Alabama Recreation Center. The proceeds will be used equally by The local chapters of The American Red Cross and The Salvation Army.
