Community Service Center
Volunteer Response for Hurricane Katrina
205-348-2865
Update – Sept. 5, 2005
The Community Service Center is working to coordinate campus and community
efforts toward Hurricane Katrina Relief.
NOTICE: NO MORE DONATIONS ARE BEING ACCEPTED AT THE STUDENT RECREATION
CENTER.
IMMEDIATE NEEDS
- To Student Affairs departments, the Rec. Center has requested the
use of dry erase or flip chart message boards to help facilitate internal
communication with the evacuees. At least two or three will help greatly.
You may contact George Brown for delivery.
- Evacuees are also asking
for transportation assistance. Please inform interested volunteers
who are willing to help in this way. Per G. Brown, some plans were
being made however, no logistics have been confirmed.
- Per Julie Foster,
evacuees have requested that Catholic masses and Episcopal services
be held at the Rec. Center. I have given her Father Gerald Holloway’s
and Rev. Ken Fields’ contact information to arrange for those services.
VOLUNTEER NEEDS
- United Way has notified us that Temporary Emergency Services is preparing
to open its temporary store (Old Salvation Army Thrift Store) at the
Leland Shopping Plaza, Alberta City today. Volunteers are needed to
help sort donations. Karen Thompson is the contact for Temporary Emergency
Services.
- Non-perishable food donations are still very much needed
to re-stock the West Alabama Food Bank. Donations may be brought
to the Community Service Center or directly to the West Alabama Food
Bank at 1605 23rd Avenue. Craig Young, Executive Director, may be reached
at 205-759-5519.
- Donations of gas cards, phone cards, Wal-Mart cards,
restaurant gift cards and the like should be brought to the Community
Service Center, 355 Ferguson Center. Please call us at 205-348-2865.
Again, we appreciate the outpouring of support from all community volunteers.
Thank you so much for all you are doing for Hurricane Katrina evacuees.
