TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Dr. Margaret Ingram King, associate vice president
for student affairs at Tulane University and an alumna of The University
of Alabama, has been named vice president for student affairs at
UA.
“Dr. Margaret King brings to The University of Alabama a
wide range of experience in student affairs including program development
to foster partnerships with academics, innovative approaches to
improving the freshman year experience, and directing the career
center. She has been an effective leader at Tulane University for
the past 16 years. We look forward to her joining our leadership
team in December,” said UA President Robert E. Witt.
King accepted a program coordinator position at Tulane in 1987.
She rose through the ranks serving as director of Newcomb College
Programs (Tulane University) from 1988-97. She was named an assistant
dean in 1997, assistant vice president of student affairs in 1999
and associate vice president in 2001.
Prior to joining Tulane, King was an administrator at Troy State
University. She holds a Ph.D. in educational administration from
the University of New Orleans and a master’s degree in counseling
from The University of Alabama. She also did her undergraduate work
at UA earning a bachelor’s degree with honors in 1969.
As an undergraduate at UA, King majored in math and earned numerous
academic and leadership awards including the Algernon Sydney Sullivan
Award, one of the University’s premier student awards. She
was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and Mortar Board and was an officer
in Chi Omega sorority.
King is a frequent presenter at professional meetings speaking
on such topics as innovation in the classroom and leadership development.
Witt thanked Dr. Kathleen Cramer, UA associate vice president for
student affairs, for her service as interim vice president. “The
University is extremely fortunate to have someone of Dr. Cramer’s
experience and ability serving during this interim period. The Office
of Student Affairs has not been in a holding pattern but has continued
to move forward under Dr. Cramer’s leadership,” he said.
Witt also thanked the search committee for their work in identifying
candidates nationally for the position. UA faculty member Steve
Miller chaired the search committee.
