UA Engineering Professor Selected for International Conference

TUSCALOOSA , Ala. — Dr. Wei Song, assistant professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering at The University of Alabama, was recently invited to attend the Sixth International Workshop on Structural Control and Monitoring.

Song will represent the structural control and monitoring community as a member of the U.S. delegation for the workshop.

The workshop is held every four years with the purpose of planning future research directions in the structural control and monitoring field. The panel will be organized this year by the Centre for Built Infrastructure Research, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia.

The workshop will be held Dec. 10-11.

Song received both a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in structural engineering at Tongji University in Shanghai, China. He later received a master’s degree in systems science and mathematics at Washington University in St. Louis before earning a doctorate in civil engineering from Purdue University in 2011.

The focus of Song’s research includes structural condition assessment, advanced experimental technique, cyber-physical system design promoting community resilience and optimal control design for nonlinear stochastic systems.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s fully accredited College of Engineering has more than 3,900 students and more than 110 faculty. In the last eight years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater, Hollings, Portz and Truman scholars.
