TUSCALOOSA, Ala. The University of Alabama Community Service Center is inviting students to participate in the House United Habitat for Humanity Blitz Build with Auburn students June 12-18 in Baldwin County.

The Blitz Build, held jointly with Auburn University, is the first service project of its kind for the two universities, organizers say.

During the Blitz Build, 40 students from UA and Auburn will work together in 12-hour shifts to build a house for a Habitat for Humanity family. Organizers from both universities say they hope to make the build an annual event for students.

“Participating in an event like this helps UA students build strong relationships with each other, with students from Auburn, and in a community,” said Dr. Wahnee Sherman, CSC director. “Both institutions value giving back to the state and this experience will be a tangible example of that commitment.”

The cost of the trip is $250 and includes meals, lodging and transportation. Applications are currently available on the CSC website at www.volunteer.ua.edu by following the House United link and in the CSC, 346 Ferguson.

The deadline for students to apply is April 8.

The Community Service Center’s mission is to educate students for service advocacy and leadership, civic responsibility and lifelong volunteerism by increasing awareness of community needs, resources and opportunities for social problem solving. The CSC and UA students were responsible for more than 360,000 hours of service last year in local communities, our state, across the nation and abroad.

The University of Alabama, a student-centered research university, is experiencing significant growth in both enrollment and academic quality. This growth, which is positively impacting the campus and the state's economy, is in keeping with UA's vision to be the university of choice for the best and brightest students. UA, the state's flagship university, is an academic community united in its commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all Alabamians.
