Music Therapy Students from UA Receive Honors at National Conference

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Three music therapy students at The University of Alabama were recently honored at the annual conference of the American Music Therapy Association in San Diego, Calif.

Sarah Pitts, a senior from Memphis, Tenn., received the E. Thayer Gaston Award for most outstanding student research paper. She was recognized at the association’s business meeting, received a cash award and presented her paper at the research poster session.

Ellyn Hamm, a junior from Huntsville, was chosen president-elect of AMTAS, the national student wing of AMTA. Her work as a summer intern in the national office to create a new section of professional advocacy for the member Web site was recognized during the conference.

Lelia Huber, a junior from Sugar Hill, Ga., was elected secretary of AMTAS.

Also at the meeting, Dr. Andrea Cevasco, assistant professor of music at UA, served as co-presenter for a preconference institute that trains music therapists to work in neonatal intensive care units and she taught a continuing education course in the uses of technology in music therapy settings.
