TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama is soliciting feedback from the community on the concept of a plaza at Foster Auditorium that will be designed to commemorate the events surrounding the “Stand in the Schoolhouse Door.”
Faculty, staff, students and members of the community are invited to share their comments at open meetings on Tuesday, Nov. 24 and Monday, Nov. 30 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in room 127 of the Biology Building on campus.
In addition, feedback may be shared on the UA Web site any time until Jan. 15, 2010. To provide online comments, please visit www.ua.edu and click on “Foster Auditorium Plaza Renovation” under Quick Links. The Web site also offers an opportunity to share personal stories or memories of Foster Auditorium.
Foster Auditorium is the site of the first successful enrollment of African-American students at The University of Alabama, following then-Gov. George Wallace’s unsuccessful “Stand in the Schoolhouse Door” in June 1963. Built in 1939, the historic building was used for graduation exercises, indoor athletics events, concerts, lectures, and other large gatherings, including registration. It is currently under renovation and will house the women’s basketball and volleyball programs upon completion.
The University of Alabama, a student-centered research university, is experiencing significant growth in both enrollment and academic quality. This growth, which is positively impacting the campus and the state's economy, is in keeping with UA's vision to be the university of choice for the best and brightest students. UA, the state's flagship university, is an academic community united in its commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all Alabamians.
