Former Congressman Browder to Speak at UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. Glen Browder, known across the state for his political service, will be on The University of Alabama campus Tuesday, Oct. 27 to discuss his new book “The South’s New Racial Politics: Inside the Race Game of Southern History” in a lecture at 4 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library.
A reception and book signing will follow for Browder, former U.S. congressman, Alabama secretary of state and state legislator.
This event is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by University Libraries and through the donations of Dr. Lakey and Susan Tolbert.
Browder’s new book provides insight into how blacks and whites in today’s South engage in a politics that is qualitatively different from the past. Browder’s extensive public career – covering 14 years in elective office and spanning several decades as a political science professor – has been directed toward political reform and adjustment to a changing world.
Browder, a Democrat, served one term as a state representative from 1982-1986 before being elected secretary of state in 1986. He won a special election to the U. S. House of Representatives in 1989 and served in Congress until an unsuccessful run for the U. S. Senate in 1996.
Browder has been an Eminent Scholar at Jacksonville State University since 1999. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Presbyterian College and master’s and doctoral degrees in political science from Emory University. Before entering politics, he taught political science at JSU.
