TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama program in creative writing will host a screening of the award-winning documentary “The Dhamma Brothers” and a talk by UA creative writing graduate students teaching in the Alabama prisons on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at the Bama Theatre in downtown Tuscaloosa.
A reception at 6 p.m., featuring artwork and writing produced by Alabama inmates, will be followed by the screening of “The Dhamma Brothers” at 7 p.m. Following the film, there will be remarks by UA prison arts program teachers and Kyes Stevens, director of the Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project.
“The Dhamma Brothers” tells a dramatic tale of human potential and transformation in an Alabama prison as it closely follows and documents the stories of 36 prison inmates who enter into an arduous and intensive meditation program.
This opportunity to bring educational avenues to Alabama prison inmates is the result of an outreach partnership between the UA program in creative writing and Auburn University. UA’s MFA in creative writing graduate students are supported by a new Prison Arts Fellowship made possible by Dr. David Francko, dean of UA’s Graduate School.
