TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama’s Multiple Abilities Program has received a prestigious award from the International Reading Association: a certificate of distinction that commends the program for exemplary preparation of pre-service teachers in the area of literacy.
The award will be presented in May at the International Reading Association’s annual convention in Minneapolis, Minn.
The Multiple Abilities Program, or MAP, begun in 1994, prepares people to teach in both special education and general education settings at the elementary level. It is a unique program that is project-based, rather than course-based. MAP students experience a teacher-preparation curriculum that integrates general education with special education in both coursework and fieldwork.
MAP courses are team-taught by special education and general education faculty and special education and general education elementary teachers.
The International Reading Association supports literacy professionals through a wide range of resources including support for literacy research, advocacy efforts, volunteerism and professional development activities.
The University of Alabama, a student-centered research university, is experiencing significant growth in both enrollment and academic quality. This growth, which is positively impacting the campus and the state's economy, is in keeping with UA's vision to be the university of choice for the best and brightest students. UA, the state's flagship university, is an academic community united in its commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all Alabamians.
