Projects for Hunger and Homelessness Week at UA to Benefit West Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama Community Service Center’s Hunger and Homelessness Week will be held Feb. 16-20 and is designed to raise the public’s awareness of poverty in our state and around the world.
Last year in Alabama, 6,025 individuals were homeless on any given night, organizers of the UA event report.
UA students have opportunities to volunteer throughout the week, including at the following events:
Monday, Feb. 16
Jesus Way Shelter renovations
Work will include painting porches and cleaning up the basketball court
8 a.m.-noon or 1-4 p.m.
Tuesday, Feb. 17
West Alabama Food Bank, 8 a.m.-noon
Salvation Army, 4:30-6:30 p.m.
Work will include making brown bag lunches
Wednesday, Feb. 18
Empty Bowl Campaign
University Presbyterian Church
11 a.m.-7 p.m.
Volunteers needed to help serve
Thursday, Feb. 19
“The Great American Sleep Out”
UA Recreation Fields
Build survival bags, watch “Pursuit of Happiness”
8 p.m. – 6 a.m.
Participants should bring sleeping bags and blankets
Friday, Feb. 20
Concert at Little Willie’s
