TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Women’s Resource Center, in conjunction with the department of women’s studies, is hosting a screening of the documentary film “Going on 13” as a part of the Brown Bag Lecture Series Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 12:30 p.m. in 308 Manly Hall.
Filmmakers, Dawn Valdez and Kristy Guevara-Flanagan, chronicle the lives of four young girls as they navigate the time between childhood and becoming young women. “Going on 13” gives viewers the opportunity to see what real girls experience during the pivotal transformations of puberty.
Valdez and Guevara-Flanagan filmed the girls over a 4-year period and use a mix of interviews with each girl, cinema vérité, and stop-motion animation to tell their stories. The film has been screened at the Tribeca Film Festival and the Portland Women’s Film Festival.
Each month the Women’s Resource Center will sponsor a speaker, film or other activity that is relevant to the UA community, as part of the Brown Bag Lecture Series. The series is free and open to the community. Those attending are encouraged to bring a lunch. For more information, contact the WRC at 205/348-5040.
