NOTEWORTHY/INSPIRING GRADUATES:
TYRONE PROTHRO TO GRADUATE – All-SEC football player Tyrone Prothro is graduating from the College of Human Environmental Sciences. Prothro, best known for an over-the-shoulder catch in Alabama’s win over Southern Miss in 2005, won both the 2006 ESPY Award and the Pontiac Game Changing Award of the Year for Best Play.
TWO FOOTBALL PLAYERS GRADUATE SATURDAY, RETURN TO FIELD IN FALL – Rashad Johnson, a former walk-on who has become the team leader in the secondary, and John Parker Wilson, two-year starter at quarterback, are graduating from the College of Arts and Sciences and Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration, respectively, with another year of eligibility left. They’ll don their caps and gowns in the morning and helmets and uniforms in the afternoon.
UA COMMENCEMENT WILL BE A FAMILY AFFAIR WHEN MOTHER AND SON RECEIVE DEGREES TOGETHER – Moniaree Jones of Pelham believes that learning is something that can be done over a lifetime. This 54-year-old student will prove that point when she receives her master’s degree from the Capstone College of Nursing at UA’s Aug. 9 summer commencement alongside her 21-year-old son, Drew Jones, who will receive a bachelor’s degree in Latin. Jones will keep her job as a legal nurse consultant in Birmingham but she doesn’t plan on leaving the Capstone. Jones has been accepted into a doctoral program for the fall semester. Contact her at nightingalempj@bellsouth.net or 205/901-6237 (cell).
