TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Women’s Resource Center is sponsoring a SHARP (Sexual Harassment, Assault & Rape Prevention) self-defense course on Monday, March 3, and Wednesday, March 5, from 6-10 p.m. at the UA Student Recreation Center free of charge to female students, faculty and staff.
“SHARP empowers UA women by educating them on self-protection and safety precautions,” says Stacy Panitch, WRC programs coordinator. “The class provides a positive atmosphere that leaves women with the base knowledge needed to reduce risk.”
The training is a combination of discussion on psychological risk-reduction strategies of self-defense followed by basic physical techniques. Moderate physical exercise is involved, so participants should wear comfortable clothing.
The class is limited to 30 participants who are asked to pre-register with the WRC by Feb. 29. Students must attend both days in order to complete the eight-hour course.
The class is taught by certified SHARP instructors from across campus, including the WRC, University Police, Housing & Residential Communities and University Recreation. The event is co-sponsored by the Office of Judicial Affairs, UAPD and University Recreation.
For more information or to register for the class, call the WRC at 205/348-5040.
