Molly Mercer Lynch, who was forced to withdraw from The University of Alabama during her last semester as a student in 1938, will return to campus Wednesday, Jan. 17 to receive her diploma.

UA Provost Judy Bonner and College of Education Dean James McLean will present the diploma to Lynch at 10 a.m. in room 254 Rose Administration Building.

Lynch left UA in 1938 when she became ill with malaria. The Depression and World War II kept her from returning to the University, but she had always talked of completing her degree. Last year, Lynch’s daughters contacted the University to determine what coursework was necessary for their mom to earn her degree. UA officials went over her records and determined that she met all requirements for a degree in 1939. Lynch’s degree was awarded at Commencement ceremonies in December, but the 90-year-old grad who currently lives in Tucson, Ariz. was unable to attend.

Media are invited to cover the diploma presentation. Contact Suzanne Dowling, 205/348-8324, sdowling@ur.ua.edu or Cathy Andreen, 205/348-8322, candreen@ur.ua.edu for more information.
