African-American Read-In to be Held at UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Women’s Resource Center and the WILL program (Women Involved in Learning and Leading) are sponsoring the National African-American Read-In Monday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in the UA Crossroads Community Center lounge in Ferguson Center.
The Read-In is part of a national event with participants reading their favorite passages from the work of African-American women writers with a goal of having 1 million readers.
“Often works by women of color are not included in the ‘must-reads’ recommended to students. There is such a range of impressive works that offer us a voice not often heard as part of a mainstream education — that of an African-American woman,” said Elle Shaaban-Magaña, staff coordinator of the event.
This year marks the third year UA has participated in the annual event. Last year, participants read from a range of works including excerpts of novels, poetry, lyrics from songs, and speeches from notable African-American women.
“As a young African-American woman, I look forward to this opportunity to learn more about authors that I have not been exposed to,” said student event coordinator Christa Walker.
The Read-In is a part of the African-American Heritage Month calendar of events.
Students, faculty, staff and members of the community are encouraged to attend.
The event is free and is open to the public.
