UA SGA Hosts Political Candidates for Capstone Political Awareness Day

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama Student Government Association is hosting Capstone Political Awareness Day Monday, Oct. 2 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Plaza on campus.
The purpose of Capstone Political Awareness Day is to educate young Alabamians and encourage them to participate in federal, state and local elections.
Several candidates on the ballot in the upcoming state election are slated to be on campus for the event.
The event is a new initiative of the SGA directed by student Ashley Hays, SGA vice president for external affairs, and the SGA governmental affairs committee.
“We want to make sure that all students know the issues and who the candidates are in the November elections. That is why we are working so hard to make sure all candidates are invited and can attend,” Hays said.
The candidates will be outlining their platforms and speaking to issues that affect students. Candidates for office in Tuscaloosa County have also been invited and will be coming in throughout the day to address the audience.
The tentative schedule includes:
10 a.m. – Opening remarks by Ashley Hays of the SGA
11 a.m. – John Tyson Jr., Democratic nominee for attorney general
Noon – Nancy Worley, Alabama Secretary of State and candidate for re-election
2:30 p.m. – Tuscaloosa Mayor Walter Maddox
3 p.m. – Troy King, Alabama Attorney General and candidate for re-election
4 p.m. – Luther Strange, Republican nominee for lieutenant governor
5:30 p.m. – Gordon Stone, executive director, Alabama Higher Education Partnership
The event is open to the media, as well as the general public.
