TUSCALOOSA, Ala – The University of Alabama GEAR UP project has received a $38,000 grant from the National Council for Community and Education Partnerships and the AT&T Foundation to establish a portable College and Career Readiness Computer Lab for Holt High School.
This computer lab will be used to present essential teaching modules that promote technological literacy and provide the latest in technology for students and teachers at Tuscaloosa’s Holt High School. The materials and equipment can be adapted for use in all subject areas and will help to prepare students for college and careers.
NCCEP and the AT&T Foundation work in conjunction to support community/education partnerships. The local GEAR UP project is one of 74 grantees in the 2006 competition that was available for all GEAR UP programs.
GEAR UP, or Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, is financially supported through a 50/50 match of funds and in-kind services between community partners and the United States Department of Education. Since 2000, it has served students attending Holt High School and Davis-Emerson Middle School in the Tuscaloosa County School System. The program provides activities and services that assist students with academic achievement, encourage students to stay in school and prepare students for college and careers.
