TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Beginning this summer, The University of Alabama College of Education will begin a new Executive Ed.D. Program in Higher Education Administration.

The two-year program, offered with the support of UA’s College of Continuing Studies, allows education professionals to earn their doctorate without leaving their jobs. At the end of the two-year program, both coursework and dissertations are complete.

According to Dr. James E. McLean, dean of the College of Education, this program is another effort by UA and the College to reduce barriers to obtaining a doctorate degree, and to prepare educators for increased responsibilities and career advancement.

“With over 50 percent of the community college deans and presidents eligible to retire within the next five years and a shortage of student personnel officers at all levels of higher education in Alabama, our state is in danger of a leadership shortage at the highest levels,” said McLean.

“The Executive Ed.D. of Higher Education program will provide students with the opportunity to work closely with other educational leaders with diverse professional backgrounds, research interests and overall education perspectives,” said Dr. Claire Major, program director.

Applications for the program are due by March 15. For more information or to enroll, contact Jean Foster Herron, 205/348-1169, jherron@bamaed.ua.edu, or visit www.education.ua.edu.

The University of Alabama, a student-centered research university, is experiencing significant growth in both enrollment and academic quality. This growth, which is positively impacting the campus and the state's economy, is in keeping with UA's vision to be the university of choice for the best and brightest students. UA, the state's flagship university, is an academic community united in its commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all Alabamians.
