TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Winners of The University of Alabama’s first scholarships funded by the S.P.I.R.I.T. student campaign will be announced at 1 p.m., Friday, April 22 on the lawn of the President’s Mansion on campus.
Four UA students, all first-generation college students, have been selected to receive the awards funded by their fellow students. The S.P.I.R.I.T. campaign, created with the input of student leaders, asked students to donate $2 each to UA for “first in family” scholarships. Conducted for the first time from Jan. 27-March 24 of this year, S.P.I.R.I.T. (Students Playing Important Roles in Tradition) raised $9,200 and will provide four $2,300 scholarships.
Speaking at the ceremony will be Graham Smith, coordinator of the S.P.I.R.I.T. campaign, and students Grace Shelby, president of the UA Coordinating Council of Student Organizations; Pelham Carroll, president of the Interfraternity Council, and one of the scholarship winners. Dr. Judy Bonner, UA provost and vice president for academic affairs, will also be in attendance.
