Statement Concerning Incidents of Aug. 21-22, 2002

Officials are investigating an arson at Delta Sigma Theta sorority house, located at 430 Smith-Woods Circle on The University of Alabama campus. A fire alarm sounded at 4:47 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22. UA Police Department and Tuscaloosa Fire Department responded at 4:50 a.m. The fire was quickly extinguished. No one was injured in the fire. Eight women were in the building at the time of the fire. Law enforcement and fire officials are investigating the incident.

On Wednesday, Aug. 21 from 5-10 p.m., Delta Sigma Theta sorority and Omega Psi Phi fraternity hosted a picnic event at the UA amphitheater (155 McCorvey Dr.) that had been registered and approved by UA officials. At 10:32 p.m., during the cleanup following the event, an altercation occurred during which gunshots were fired into the air. No one was injured from the gunshots. UAPD made two arrests in the incident. The subjects were charged with reckless endangerment. The incident remains under investigation.
