Dr. Giles Gunn to Present MLK Lecture April 16

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – An English professor who also specializes in global and international studies at the University of California-Santa Barbara will present a lecture at The University of Alabama on April 16 as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture Series.
Dr. Giles Gunn will speak on “Rethinking Human Solidarity: The Difference that Difference Makes in a Globalized World” at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Morgan Auditorium on the UA campus.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture Series is jointly sponsored by UA, Stillman College and Shelton State Community College.
Gunn is the author of five books, including his most recent, “Beyond Solidarity: Pragmatism and Difference in a Globalized World,” published by the University of Chicago Press in 2001. He has also written more than 100 articles and book reviews and edited several books.
A member of the faculty at UCSB since 1985, Gunn served as chair of the English department from 1993-1997. He also served as director of the UCSB Dialogues in Human Values and Public Life from 1997-1999 and as acting director of the global and international studies department in 2001.
Gunn earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in religion and literature at the University of Chicago. He also attended Episcopal Theological Seminary. His past faculty positions include the University of Chicago, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and the University of Florida.
The lecture is open to the public.
